5 Building Blocks For Online Success
Posted by: | CommentsThe past year was pretty odd for me. It was more challenging than I was used to in a number of ways. But the Zen folks say that adversity and change are always required for growth. I lived it this year and do feel that to be true.
I absolutely believe there is a silver lining attached to every single negative that comes your way. It’s up to you to find it though. If you don’t believe in that silver lining philosophy 100%, you’ll forever be stuck with the negatives and never enjoy the growth and advantages life’s kruddy stuff brings along.
The krud in your life has good sides. But you have to uncover and find the good stuff it also offers.
Ok, let’s move on; I think you get my point.
Let’s talk about earning income online.
I speak with many beginning marketers and have a good “feel” for what’s required for their success. Following up with many beginners has taught me how to spot the ones who at least have a chance of success.
Basic and Required Factors For Success (in my opinion):
1. Completely non-technical people won’t make the cut. I define “non-technical” here as a mindset. None of this is rocket science; anyone can learn it…UNLESS there is a complete fear of technology. For example, some beginners are petrified by the wp-admin screen and simply can’t overcome it. My response to them is that there are other ways, besides Internet marketing, to make money at home. They need to explore other options they have.
2. Time is money in this business. Too often the scams have convinced people they can spend a few hours a week and build a successful business. Of course that thinking sells scams, but that is all. Many people simply don’t have the time required. They have a job, a family and not enough time to devote to the process. I won’t specify a minimum time here, but I can tell you, in the beginning anyway, 3 or 4 hours a week won’t cut it.
3. Those most likely to achieve success down the road are NOT strapped for cash. When someone tells me they are laid off and need to learn Internet marketing in order to make their coming house payments, I encourage them to find as many part-time jobs as they can for now. There is simply no way to learn this stuff and make it all come together if you feel that much pressure. It’s not paint by numbers; your head has to be in the right place to fit the pieces together correctly.
4. Successful people enjoy the “process” of Internet marketing. No, none of us like 100% of all the tasks involved, but we have to enjoy 90% of it. Otherwise, the very difficult process of building an online business is simply too much work for those who do not enjoy the process.
5. Support from friends and family really helps. I won’t say that your spouse has to be ALL the way on board with it in the beginning. I am living proof you can make it work even without that early support. Also, one of my most successful students overcame tremendous family pressure in the beginning (now he’s well into the mid 4 figures each month and on his way to 5). But wow, it sure helps if you have some support…or at least not have any anti-support. My advice here is to invest as much time in communication as possible to ensure you don’t let any negative energy build around you. (meaning…don’t keep your nose glued to your computer screen every possible minute while neglecting too much time with your spouse. This neglect, along with making ZERO income in the beginning, is pretty tough for most spouses…surprise surprise.)
There are many other minor factors that help the process along of course. But I believe those 5 are pretty important for everyone beginning the process.
Do Guru’s Hoard The Good Online Methods?
Posted by: | CommentsPeople new to Internet marketing have a few hard (and expensive) lessons to usually learn. The most common one is following the idea that they can “buy” their way into online success via a “packaged system”. Usually a very slick sales page promising the world is involved.
No matter if the “package” was an outright scam or one that had some legit info, it never works for the beginner. All the excitement of buying “the key to success” very quickly turns to frustration.
Some folks have to learn that lesson more than once unfortunately.
Success is not plug & play. It’s not paint-by-numbers either. That’s why the one-size-fits-all packages just don’t work for anyone.
Can you imagine yourself trying to open a home building business but you don’t personally know how to even build a simple wall or counter?
That’s how most beginners think. They mostly all put the cart before the horse when trying to build a biz online.
So why don’t the “gurus” making and selling all those packages start out more with the “basics” as required learning first?
Some people tell me they think the Guru’s just want to keep everyone stupid in that respect so they have less competition. But that’s not true. There is more than enough room; the Internet is a very very big place.
The simple truth is that it takes a ton of work to teach the basics and it takes a ton of work to learn the basics. It’s just that simple.
Teaching and learning the basics is not a huge amount of fun.
Both the Guru’s and the students would rather talk and think about the more glamorous aspect of online marketing…like making buckets of cash.
The people already down that dead-end road with a hyped-up “package” or two have either already quit out of frustration or, like you, have persevered on.
You KNOW (or should know) that people who are successful online are not lucky and they are not smarter than the average person. The successful people did not quit; they learned from their mistakes.
Those who have online success all learned the basics and honed their skills with action…before they ever saw their first dime.
It cracks me up how people look at the Guru’s with awe; yet they never see or think about the trials and errors and frustration all successful people online have been through.
Success comes in very small increments that begin to add up. That’s how it works in this and most businesses. In fact, it is often 5 steps forward and 4.5 steps back for a lot of beginners.
Learn the basics and what works for other people, don’t try to reinvent the wheel, take action, there will be failures so “fail fast” and keep learning, keep taking action, keep tweaking, keep improving, keep making tiny tiny steps of progress. Never quit.
Lastly, you CAN learn and do all this and have massive success all on your own.
But WHY would you do it like that?
Time is money. Why spend the next year constantly moving 5 steps and then losing 4.5 of them by making beginners’ mistakes all the time?
In the beginning you don’t know what you don’t know! Fortunately, when I see my beginning students making serious mistakes, they have me there to correct them right away. They had no idea it was wrong; to them it seemed logical until I explained to them why.
Beginners who are on their own will suffer through the most basic of concepts and steps simply because they didn’t know better and/or have not been taught correctly.
I have a video on my coaching page from a student which I think you will enjoy. He’s had great success and you’ll be inspired watching it.
Video:

When you finish it, consider where you want to be by this time next year. Consider that time is money and the sooner you get on the right track, the sooner most of your steps will be forward toward your goals instead of constantly losing traction in frustration.

Is Content Still King?
Posted by: | Comments
There was a saying when I first began Internet marketing (in a serious way) which I luckily took to heart.
Content is King
What it means is that the more and better content your site had, the better. Of course content could be articles, video, or photos. But mostly it referred to, and still does, written content. The idea was that valuable, written content is what gave websites their value and what Google really looked for when deciding how to rank them.
In the beginning, Google focused almost entirely on content. Back in “the day”, on-page SEO ruled. All you had to do was have great, well optimized content on your site and you would rank well. Sometimes, before the algorithm was refined, even trashy/spammy content would rank well.
Content was king then….is it still?
In general, the answer is still yes.
Your site must still offer value to the world. (Google has cracked down hard on spam, duplicate content, auto-blogs, link farms, and even the major article directories to some extent.
Therefore, nothing has changed concerning the on-page aspect of SEO. You still need great content on your site that is optimized correctly. (by the way, “correct SEO optimization” has changed a lot over the years…but that is another blog post).
Creating high quality and original content is still important for your site.
But now days, the concept of “content is king” goes a step further. Today, off-page SEO is vital to success in all but the tiniest niches. Off-page optimization simply has to do with getting backlinks with optimized anchor text. The more links the better AND the higher quality the linking web site is, the better.
Simply put, backlinking is very important and required for success in organic search results in almost all cases. Building backlinks requires content. Whether you submit articles to article directories, post relevant comments to blogs, create feeder sites for link wheels, or build relevant Web 2.0 sites, you will need content…and tons of it!
So yes, content is still king….and it’s more important than ever!
Backlinks: How To Count Them
Posted by: | CommentsSomeone just wrote me who was very upset. They had been working hard at getting backlinks to their site for several months. But when they checked their progress in a backlinking tool, it only showed a few dozen backlinks!
As a side note, it’s a good thing they contacted me because when I looked at some of the methods he was using to get backlinks, it was obvious he didn’t really understand how to use anchor text. …but that’s another story for later.
I say it all the time, but I’ll say it again: Backlink tools are NOT accurate….None of them! Plus it seems they can take forever to update with new backlinks.
Therefore, these tools cause beginning marketers to think their efforts are not paying off. But in this video I show you just how off-the-mark those tools are.
My advice to new marketers is to backlink in the correct way as much as they can. Everyone needs a system where they get backlinks on a regular basis. It cannot be a “hit and miss” activity. Plus, one’s methods have to be reasonably correct in order to get the most out of process.
After you watch the above video, go here to see one of my favorite Backlinking Tools.
My VA’s and/or I use that tool virtually every day. But no, as a beginner you do not have to have a tool to begin backlinking; it can be done manually in the beginning (we all start that way).
If you have any questions about this process, post them below in the comments.
Will Affiliate Marketing Die Someday?
Posted by: | CommentsI had 2 people this week ask me the same question; I bet there is an email going around about it.
Here’s the question:
Will affiliate marketing still be around in a few years? (He was worried that if he put all the work into now, it might all be wasted if affiliate marketing dies.)
Here’s my answer:
I told him that I didn’t know. But also, I told him I did not care. He seemed shocked at first I would say such a thing.
I quickly explained what I meant. I told him there were four aspects to online success.
1. Choosing an area to market (Find a niche)
2. Building websites (Not just with such things as instant site builders, web 2.0 sites, etc.)
3. Utilize a method for getting traffic to the site (via SEO, social media, etc.)
4. Making income with the site’s traffic
Items 1, 2 and 4 above are the easy parts. There are tons of great niches, and they are easy and quick to find once you know how. Plus, anyone can learn to build a simple and nice looking site. Also, making income on the site IS easy…once the site gets targeted traffic.
That leaves #3. That is the tough one. That is where all the work is. #3 is why 97% of beginning marketers never succeed.
The original question is about #4. Affiliate marketing is one way to monetize a site now. If affiliate marketing goes away tomorrow, no problem…we will simply use another method. Right now there are AdSense ads, banner impression advertising, selling clicks directly, lead generation (then selling those leads), selling your own stuff directly, etc.
Who knows what new methods will evolve down the road.
I told him I was not worried if affiliate marketing goes away or not.
As long as people spend money online (that is one thing that seems a given), we will ALWAYS be able to monetize targeted traffic to our sites. There will ALWAYS be advertisers who, in some way shape or form, want access to our targeted traffic.
Again, if your niche selection is good, and your site attracts plenty of targeted traffic, you will ALWAYS have methods to monetize that traffic.
So let’s deal with numbers 1, 2, and 3 above. #4 really is the easiest part and will always take care of itself one way or the other.

14 Things Would-Be Marketers Should Know
Posted by: | CommentsThis is a long post, but I think it is important to brush up on the basics once in a while. Take 5 minutes to read this long mail and you may very well find some areas which need tweaking with your online efforts.
1. Do not invest much money in your first site. This is the great thing about the Internet! There is little downside and the rewards can be almost unlimited. If you can’t make money on a low cost start-up, you won’t make any money no matter how much you spend on the site…advertising etc. I started Cactus Canyon with a $3.95 per month hosting account and one case of product I bought for $200! There is not another business opportunity ANYWHERE with such low risk and high reward possibilities than an online business.
2. Google’s ranking criteria consists of over 200 different variables. Relevant and optimized content and the number of incoming, one-way links from relevant sites are at the top of the list.
3. If you have someone else design and build your site, your first question to them is do they have a good working knowledge of SEO (search engine optimization) and Internet marketing in general. If they don’t have a clue, find someone else. Better yet, learn to design your site yourself. In my opinion, your chances of success are slim to none if you don’t learn how to create and modify your site yourself. It is not rocket science. Take the time to learn it if you are serious about making money on the Internet.
4. The more pages of content the better. Set yourself some goals for content. Imagine if you create one new page per day. In a year the site will have 365 pages of great content! This content should attract a lot of traffic! Even if your goal was only 2 pages per week, you would still have over 100 pages in a year!
5. Write your content page AFTER you have determined the exact keyword phrase you are going to use and then optimize with it. Never write content simply for the sake of writing content. Always use keyword tools to help you write content which people are actually searching for.
6. Remember that keyword phrases 3 and 4 words long are MUCH easier to rank for. Although there are many more searches for “dogs” than “dog training tips”, it will be far easier to get traffic to the page optimized with the longer phrase. PLUS the people who search for and find your “dog training tips” page will be interested in EXACTLY what your page is about.
7. Think NICHE! The Internet is HUGE, and so is the competition! But no matter what the area is, there are enough niche areas within it to generate a LOT of traffic and profits.
8. Keep your site’s theme narrow. Google LOVES themes! In other words, for a dog site, focusing on a narrow theme will make it more attractive to Google. All things being equal, a hundred page site about dogs in general will have less respect from Google than a 100 page site about dog training. Keep your site focused!
9. NEVER pay money to a company to “Get your site submitted to hundreds of search engines”. This is a COMPLETE waste of money.
10. NEVER sign up with a company which promises 100′s of incoming links! Remember that saying “If it sounds too good to be true, it is”. AND it could get your site banned if Google thinks you are personally participating in link spamming! There are no free lunches in Internet Marketing. Before you ever pay money for any type of listing or linking service, PLEASE write to me and let us talk about it first! Don’t end up shooting yourself in the foot!
11. Be careful about spending money for even “legitimate” links. There are many great sites with high page rank which will place a one-way link to your page from theirs for twenty-five to fifty dollars. As you may know, having a link to your site from a site with a page rank of five or six and with the same theme is a VERY good deal for your site. Google will give your site bonus points for a link like that. However, Matt Cutts with Google has stated that Google minimizes the importance of the link if they detect it is paid link. And as I said earlier, the Google spiders are VERY smart.
12. After you have a dozen or so pages of original content published to the web, go ahead and start submitting to article directories. (yes, this strategy still works great!) Ask me in your strategy call with me about how I make this process much easier.
13. You can submit your site directly to Google and Yahoo if you wish, but the search engines will give your page more relevance if they find its link in some other way; like at the directories which you submitted to. I never bother submitting directly to Google or Yahoo anymore. Besides, when Google sees links to it from another site, they will give my new site more relevance.
14. Do not spend your time or money on pay-per-click advertising like Google AdWords until you have traffic and sales coming from regular, “organic” searches. The learning curve is high for pay-per-click success. Your time and money should be spent learning basic search engine marketing. Remember, search engine optimization, both on and off page SEO,will be your most effective marketing strategy.

Is Article Marketing Dead?
Posted by: | CommentsDid you hear about EzineArticles’ fall from Google’s grace a while back? When Google did their last big update, it hammered many of the article directories. Almost overnight EzineArticles’ traffic dropped 80%. That was no doubt a bad day for them…to say the least.
Most of EA’s income comes from AdSense. And we all know that Adsense is a numbers/traffic game. So we can assume their income all but dropped by 80% too…almost overnight.
Two things happened because of EA’s fall.
- EA has become MUCH pickier on the articles they accept. They believe, and rightly so, that Google stopped seeing them as a provider of quality content. EA had allowed too much spammy content. Now they have REALLY buckled down. If you have been having problems getting articles accepted, you now know why. In fact, they have gotten too difficult for me to deal with. I have stopped trying to submit to them…it was wasting too much of my time. You can do what you want in that area, but believe me; they are NOT required for your success.
- After this happened, all of us begin hearing how article marketing is dead. I can’t tell you how many emails I get from other marketers saying article marketing no longer works. Of course, 99% of the time, they were trying to SELL me on an alternative plan/package!
If you have followed me for very long, you know I tell you how it is…no hype or scare tactics. Here is what I have to say about article marketing:
It STILL WORKS!
We used it before Google’s update and have never stopped. For my sites and my clients’, we submit from 10 to 20 articles per day using a wide variety of submission software. We get thousands of links like this. We constantly gain brand new rankings for new keywords and consistently bring up the rankings of existing keywords using article marketing.
NOTE: You do not have to submit at our level to have great success with your smaller niche sites!
Article marketing is not our only method for link-building. But it is 80 to 90 percent of our off-page SEO effort. Like I said, IT WORKS! Do not believe anyone who tells you otherwise…Period.
BUT…and here is a big “but”. You have to do article marketing the correct way. I just spoke with a person who had tried article marketing; he had little success with it he said. Come to find out, he was using one of those spammy submission services. Again, you HAVE to do it the right way or you are wasting your time.
If you feel like you are spinning your wheels and not getting anywhere, you probably just need a bit of direction and focus on tried and proven methods that work.
If you are serious about jump-starting your efforts and willing to work hard, let’s talk. Find more details about talking to me here:

Which Online Marketing Group Are You In?
Posted by: | Comments.
I’ve communicated with literally thousands of people in the past 5 years about building an online business. I learned that most people all fit into about 5 basic groups.
Group 1
Out of every 100 folks who try their hand at online marketing, about 30 get caught up in a scam right off; they get frustrated in a few weeks and quit the whole thing. (or they get caught up in one or two more scams before quitting)
Group 2
20 to 30 more learn just enough to be dangerous and take a giant leap in the wrong direction. They get frustrated in a few months and quit too.
Group 3
20 to 30 more understand the process pretty well, but severely underestimate just how much work it really takes; they get overwhelmed/frustrated and will quit before any success comes their way. They simply were not willing to work as hard as is required.
Group 4
10 to 15 are stubborn enough NOT to give up and they keep trying. Most of these folks know quite a lot about the process, but their focus is off by a few degrees. Some in this group are bullheaded enough to keep at it for years without much success to show for their efforts. I admire their tenacity.
Group 5
That leaves 2 or 3 people out of 100 that are making more than a few hundred dollars a month. These are literally the “upper crust” of marketers when it comes to the percentages of those making any income at all. Many of them will move from a few hundred dollars to thousands of dollars in a relatively short amount of time.
Which group you are in?
Once you decide, here is how I can help you:
Group 1
These folks are already gone and not reading this anyway. However, if you ARE still here, and willing to forget those “pie in the sky promises, let’s talk. But you MUST know that real Internet marketing takes a TON of work. Are you willing?
Group 2
You are in one of my favorite groups. You are willing to learn and work hard. All you need is some good direction and focus on something that can/will work. I can’t wait to talk to you!
Group 3
Sorry, I can’t help. You already decided it is too much work. Actually, at this point, you probably don’t even know the half of it…I’d stick with a regular j-o-b.
Group 4
Many of you are pretty “set in your ways” by this time. But you must take an honest look at your progress. What you are doing is not working that great. If you are willing to perhaps backup a little and maybe take a different turn here and there, I can help you.
Group 5
You guys excite me every time I talk with you! You literally have a world of opportunity right there for the taking. Let’s arrange a time to brainstorm together and move you onto that next level ASAP! Remember, if you are making just a few hundred dollars a month now, you ALREADY know how to make $1000/month…and so on!

An Internet Marketer Contacts Me
Posted by: | CommentsI just received this email from one of my newsletter followers, Jason King. I thought many people would enjoy reading what Jason had to say about his growing IM business.
Hi Steve,
Just a quick reply to say thanks for the emails you send to your list members, me being one of them.
As you said in this email, time is limited so I have a lot of emails from other IM ‘gurus’ stacked up ready to read someday, which’ll end up being never.
I do however, find yours genuinely useful and inspiring, as you tend to understand better than most how frustrating internet marketing can be in the early days. I also love and agree with the Relentless, Focused Action thing, I even wrote a blog post on it once
![]()
I found this email about the law of attraction particularly useful as it’s highly relevant to me at the moment.
Last night, rather than fret about what’s not working and why, I decided to take the opposite approach.
I wrote down all the things in internet marketing in the last year which I’d done well at and had good results.
They included the following:
o Lots of free traffic I’d achieved to particular sites or pages with highly ranked keywords
o Some very good conversion rates for mailing list squeeze pages
o A Twitter strategy which is working well for me
o The time I made my first profitable AdWords campaign, which took years to master
o An iPhone web app I made which earned good money with little effortMaking this list of things I actually got right really made me feel a lot more positive. There were various reasons why I couldn’t build on some of these successes, Apple no longer accept web apps, AdWords rules became far too strict, etc.
However, I can repeat all of these successes and I’m currently analysing them to work out how I can link them into one idea or system. For example, I never linked the high traffic pages to my high
converting squeeze page, so I didn’t capitalise on either. That’s one of the first things I’ll be doing right away.Anyway, I’ve never been a big fan of the ‘thinking positive’ thing, I prefer something more tangible like taking action and creating things. But, there does seem to be something in it as I found last night when I stopped dwelling on failures and made a list of my successes.
Thanks again for the emails… remember, for every positive email like this you receive there’s hundreds of people who are equally thankful, even if they don’t tell you directly.
Best regards,
Jason King
Where’s My Traffic?
Posted by: | CommentsHere’s a typical letter I get from beginning marketers.
Dear Steve,
I’ve had my website up now for about 5 months and it still get’s almost no traffic. I see it in Google for a few searches, but it’s never higher than page 4 or 5 in the rankings. I keep adding content, pictures, and videos to it….but I still can’t get it any traffic to it.
Can you take a look at the site and see what might be wrong?
Thanks…..
Nine times out of ten, when I look at the site, it is fine. It looks OK, the content is original (I check it in CopyScape), and the on page SEO is OK. It seems too that they have given thought to keywords, etc.
So what is wrong? Why does their “OK cool” site not get any traffic?
When I get a letter like this and see that their site is so-so-OK at least, I am always willing to bet that they have done no (or very little) off page SEO. In other words, they are not working at getting backlinks to their site.
Google puts a LOT of emphasis on backlinks. They have for a while and it’s never been truer. You can rank any page for anything if you do enough backlinking correctly. In the past year I have had amazing results with backlinking strategies which ANYONE can do.
Yes. YOU can rank any page for ANYTHING if simply do backlinking correctly and to the degree required for the competition in the niche.
There are no tricks or secrets that only a few successful people know about. (Don’t fall for scam offers that promise such.) Backlinking IS one of those step by step, methodical and highly affective strategies that beginners like to know about.
So why don’t all beginners have massive success with their sites if backlinking is so affective and IS a simple step by step process?
The reason is laziness….pure and simple.
Backlinking takes a lot of work. It is NOT fun and it surely is not glamorous work. It’s just one of those dirty jobs that must be done.
If you have a site which gets little or no traffic, are you backlinking as you should?
I offer a Free Strategy Call with me for beginners. If you have questions about this or any other topic…or just need to brainstorm with me, register for your free call with me.
