AdWords: Beginners Beware!

Posted on February 21st, 2008 in AdWords Agony by Steve

“Buy my product for $99 and you’ll be making hundreds of dollars a day starting tomorrow!” Are you buying? Probably not…you know me too well to think I’d offer such a thing.

However, there are PLENTY of takers for just such scam offers. I help out with a large affiliate network’s help desk a few hours per week. Today a very angry person submitted a help ticket.

It seems he had gotten involved in one the “type at home” scams. Their “program” described how “filling out forms” could earn someone large amounts of money. Of course the forms they spoke of were Google AdWord ads. This guy was angry because he had been promoting a vendor as an affiliate and had spent over $1000 already with Google AdWords without generating one sale.

His thinking was that the vendor should reimburse him for the $1000. After all, the Google ads sent a bunch of traffic to the vendor’s site!

Worse yet, the product he spent $1000 on promoting was only a $9.97 item. A sale would only result in four or five dollars for him! It is all but impossible to promote low priced affiliate products with AdWords AND make a profit.

I wanted so badly to ask him the obvious question: “Why had he let it go on so long? Why didn’t he cut his losses at say, $50, or $100, or even at $500 without a sale?” But I didn’t ask him…no sense kicking a guy when he’s down!

The moral of this story: Stay away from PayPerClick until you have some success with other methods. PayPerClick, in my opinion, is the hardest Internet marketing method to master. Using SEO to rank well in Google is MUCH easier!

Internet Marketing 747’s

Posted on February 15th, 2008 in Getting Started by Steve

I just talked to a really nice customer. He was bound and determined that my new product, Real WebSite Pro, was going to teach him how to promote Internet and money management products.

Although he did not know web design yet, he was sure he was going to pursue these two areas as his first Internet marketing project.

Here is how I turned his thinking around (I hope).

I told him that what he was trying to do was like enrolling in ground school and expecting to start flying 747’s in a few months. It simply does not work like that!

The very best of the best are involved in promoting Internet information products. These guys are the best there is at SEO and such things. There is no way a beginner can successfully go up against that kind of talent and succeed; there are simply too many competitors with true talent when it comes to Internet marketing products.

I said he should find a small niche to start with. He told me that he had no idea what niche he could promote (He was still stuck with the idea of big areas like Internet marketing).

I tried giving him some examples. I told him, “What if you were really into scuba diving…you could create a site all about a certain scuba diving gear…maybe something like “spear guns”. For some reason, that seemed to trigger something in his mind.

Maybe I was making progress with him!

I told him again how promoting the big areas at first was a bad idea; it would take a LONG time to see any results. On the other hand, a small niche is pretty easy to see some success with in a short amount of time. This rapid feedback creates a great learning experience for the beginner. Seeing what works and what doesn’t, in a short amount of time prepares the beginner for expanding into more competitive areas.

I felt good at the end of the conversation. I think I had him thinking smaller. If I had to guess, I think the guy will be successful in the coming years; He seemed very determined and intelligent. He will figure out the process I’m sure.

Remember, very small niche areas are the best choices for the beginner. Getting in the ring and “dukeing” it out with the big guys is no way for a beginner to start an Internet marketing career!

Deal Seeking Internet Marketers

Posted on February 10th, 2008 in Getting Started by Steve

There are two types of Internet marketers. Those in the first group are simply chasing deals. They look for the next great affiliate product to promote or some way to get their product included in a guru’s list. They might have found the latest greatest AdWords’ method which works well today (But we all know how fragile Adwords methods can be; what works today probably won’t work in a year.) There is always another deal to work or another method to discover, etc.

Most Internet marketers fit into that first category. I used to be there myself until I just got tired. I knew I had to start building systems which didn’t require me chasing the next great deal all the time.

This second group sticks with the basic principles of Internet marketing without wavering…no matter how great a new “deal” may look, they stay focused and on track.

Deal seekers look for short-term results; those in the second group build systems and assets for long term stability. Deals are here today and gone tomorrow. Assets and systems bring stable, “I sleep well at night” results.

One of the greatest assets an Internet marketer can own is a targeted list he or she has built. Nothing produces as well as a targeted list. If you are not building a list right this minute, start!

Another asset is a website which gets plenty of organic traffic (free search engine traffic). Imagine owning a business you did not have to spend a dime on for advertising! SEO can make that happen!

Other assets are things like customer lists, products you’ve created, respect within an online community, and a solid foundation of knowledge and skills.

Systems are refined methods which are proven to perform. For example, once a system is build for acquiring leads for a list, it is quite easy to setup up a similar system with the same methods for another niche.

Don’t get me wrong, there are deal seekers out there making piles and piles of money! For me however, it just makes more sense to build the assets and systems which bring more long term stability. Maybe it’s an age thing.

Build a Real WebSite

real-web-box-150.jpg“Beginning Internet Marketers” is the niche I target. Those people who have yet to earn $500 to $1000 per month consistently online are who my focus is on.

Without a doubt, the biggest hurdle most beginners face is learning how to create simple websites. I see many who try to skip this step by using free sites, some type of wizard creation tool, or by using templates; none of these are real solutions to the problem.

Every successful Internet marketer is capable of creating simple websites and landing pages.

After all, this is INTERNET marketing! Success requires very basic web design skills!

It bothered me that I did not have a good answer for beginners facing this hurdle. Therefore, I created Real WebSite Pro. It includes a graphical web editor and complete video tutorials on using it to create a working website.

However, what many beginners do not understand is that just creating a site is not enough. What good is creating a site if no one ever comes to visit?

Real WebSite Pro also includes my products Back Porch Income and The Online Basics. These two packages teach the beginner how to drive traffic to their sites and convert that traffic to profits.

Real WebSite Pro’s lessons include:

  • How to register a good domain name
  • What type of hosting is required and how to set it up
  • Connecting the domain with the hosting account
  • Learning basic web design
  • Creating an attractive and working site from scratch
  • How to rank on Google’s and Yahoo’s first page
  • Free access to weekly live teleconferences with me
(I believe in support after the sale!)
  • Plus Much More!

I’m happy I can finally offer beginners a real solution to the problem they face in creating a real website!

Best Computer for Your Internet Business

Posted on February 6th, 2008 in Getting Started by Steve

How would you like to get a brand new Dell laptop with a full Dell warranty for half the regular price? Heck, who wouldn’t?

I discovered Dell’s refurbished area several years ago. Just go to dell.com and type “refurbished” into the search field. There you can search Dell’s refurbished and “scratch and dent” shop.

I always look for the “scratch and dent” offers. In the past few years, between our home computers and the friends and family whom I have helped make purchases, I’d say I have been involved in around a dozen purchases. Only on two of the computers could I actually see any visible “scratch or dent”! The worst was on my own office computer; it had some paint slightly smeared on the side of the case (You’d have to look pretty close to see it!).

These scratch and dent computers are brand new and an excellent deal! Just tonight I ordered my wife a brand new Ruby Red Inspiron 1420 with 2 gigs of RAM for just $660 including shipping!

I went to Dell’s regular site to configure the same system; it came to $1208!

If you need a new computer for your Internet business, check out Dell’s refurbished area.

Get Paid for Building Your List

Posted on February 4th, 2008 in AdWords Agony by Steve

I’ve always believed in not reinventing the wheel. I remember when I first read about a basic list building technique involving AdWords. Here’s how it works:

The purpose of the AdWords campaign in this case is to generate leads for a targeted list. The AdWords ads push traffic to a squeeze page. A sales page for an affiliate product is presented after the opt-in page. At best, the idea is to almost break even. In other words, hopefully enough sales are made to offset the cost of the AdWords clicks. Therefore, the targeted leads can be acquired almost for free. What a deal!

However, if the sales page does a great job, the campaign just might generate a ton of leads AND make a profit while doing so!

When I read about this technique a few years ago I thought how awesome it would be to generate leads AND make money at the same time!

To make a long story short (and after a whole lot of “failing fast”, I found a combination of ads, keywords, squeeze page, and product which does just that! With this one campaign I am generating 40 to 50 VERY targeted leads per day, paying for all the clicks, AND profiting between $15 and $25 each day!

I’m not going to tell any good secrets here about the niche or keywords. However, the method is a tried and proven way of building a nice sized list and making a car payment at the same time…with just one AdWords campaign.

Don’t expect to hit a winning combination right off the bat. It may take 3 or 4 or more cycles of campaigns and products to get it working just right.
