Google’s April Fools

Posted on March 22nd, 2008 in AdWords Agony by Steve

When I logged onto my AdWords account today, Google had a message. As of April 1, 2008 (could it be their April fools to us?) they are going to force the landing page domain and the display URL to be the same.

This means the use of vanity URL’s will be a thing of the past. I have not done too much in that area, but I did have some plans to. I guess I’ll have to rethink them.

I’ll clarify a few of their new rules:

The rule only applies to new ads. If you have an ad in place now which does not conform to those rules, it seems they will continue to allow it as long as the ad remains active.

The destination URL can still be a redirect. For example, if the ad is for an affiliate product, you can still use your affiliate link in the destination URL as long as it resolves to the same domain as the display URL.

What has changed is your ability to buy a “flashy” domain name for the display and destination URL but have the domain redirect to your chosen landing page. Whatever your display URL is has to be the URL the searcher ends up on.

Feeling Overwhelmed With Internet Marketing?

Posted on March 15th, 2008 in Getting Started by Steve

The process of building a successful Internet business can be quite overwhelming for a beginner. None of this is rocket science. However, it can at times seem impossible to get all the pieces of the puzzle fitting together.

One thing Internet marketing has taught me is patience! I am pretty much the type who needs instant gratification to ensure continued motivation. It did not take me long to see that I would have to change my ways if I was to ever see success with Internet marketing.

When I first started I broke down the process into pieces I could attack one or two at a time. Every few weeks I updated an informal list I had in my head and on paper at times of all the things I needed to do for my business. Here is a sample of what a given list may have been like early on.

  1. Create a header banner.
  2. Check on and set up a merchant account.
  3. Learn how PayPal buy buttons work.
  4. Write at least 5 pages of content.
  5. Research how an autoresponder works.
  6. Buy pictures for the site from istockphoto.

The list could go on, but I didn’t let it; the list was long enough to keep me busy all week. (I was still working a full time job then.)

I would simply take one thing at a time. It was very important to me that at the end of the day (every day) I could point to something I had done which moved the business closer to the success I was looking for. Sometimes I would accomplish something quite significant…other times I might only have time to study a bit on SEO. It became a habit for me to describe to myself at the end of the day what I had accomplished for the business that day.

Even though I was spending 50 hours per week commuting to and working at my job, it was amazing how much I accomplished in a few months!

Still today I use this technique in smaller ways. When I have a large project I am working on I will break it down into smaller pieces and simply work on one or two things at a time. Before long, the project is finished!

By the way, this all goes back to my favorite saying:

Relentless Focused Action!

Never Trust the Free Keyword Tools!

Posted on March 13th, 2008 in Your Friend SEO by Steve

There has been much interest lately about my keyword research method. I just posted a step by step process of how to do it yourself on my member’s page:

www.WeberSEO.com

On the member’s page click the link “Steve’s Keyword Research Method”.

All my customers get access to the member’s page where I have numerous video and audio downloads found only on the member’s site.

More about keyword research:

Creating a great site using correct SEO techniques is useless if your keywords are not good. Anybody and everybody can use a free keyword tool to come up with piles of keywords. But that method alone just won’t cut it; I learned this lesson the hard way early in my Internet marketing career! I spent far too much time writing and optimizing pages of content which never get traffic because of poor keywords. Trusting the keyword tools 100% is NOT a good idea.

You don’t have to use my method, but you must somehow verify that people really are searching the keyword AND you have a chance at competing with the keyword.

Teaching Internet Marketing: My Calling

Posted on March 5th, 2008 in Getting Started by Steve

Every Tuesday night I sponsor a conference call for my customers. Last night was a great call! We talked about the six ways to make money online; I took questions and answers afterward.

It’s so cool for me to see my customers progress in their understanding of how Internet marketing works. It motivates me to keep doing what I do when I watch them moving from the bare-bones-beginner stages to having great discussions with me about keyword research, no follow tags, etc.!

I just want to say, “Keep up the great work everyone!”
