How People Fail Online

Posted on May 30th, 2008 in Getting Started by Steve

Most people who “fail” at Internet marketing simply give up too soon. I have heard from beginners who didn’t make money for the first two weeks, got frustrated and then just quit. Many of them who quit think the idea of making money online is simply a scam or some kind of trick.

I have no idea why so many people think there are instant riches to be made online. An Internet business is just like any other; much time and effort are required to build a profitable business. Two weeks or two months is not enough time. It takes that long to just “get your feet wet” with the concepts.

If a beginner works hard for six months without any results, then there could be a problem. It either means the beginner was not really committed or he was off on the wrong track. In most cases I have seen, people simply lack sufficient motivation.

On the other hand, I heard from another beginner who had spent hundreds of hours over the past months submitting affiliate ads to free classified sites. She had posted many thousands of ads; she WAS motivated! However, she only made a handful of sales in 4 months.  How I wish I could have redirected all that work she did toward productive tasks!

A New AdWords Policy You Should Know About!

Posted on May 27th, 2008 in AdWords Agony by Steve

If you currently have AdWords campaigns running, you should know that Google has automatically enabled a new feature within each of your campaigns.

It is called Automatic Matching.

I won’t go into all the details here what it does, but basically it will enable Google to ALWAYS max out your daily budget by supplying additional keywords of their own choice in order to reach the daily budget.

I for one do not want Google to pick my keywords for me without being able to test this (which I don’t have time for right now).

I highly suggest turning that option off in each of your campaign settings until you fully understand Automatic Matching and can test it

Article Writing Shortcuts?

Posted on May 23rd, 2008 in Where's My Traffic by Steve

Several people have contacted me lately about article marketing. There really is no debate that article marketing is a valid and useful tool when it comes to driving targeted traffic to websites. However, many beginners to it will often try to find shortcuts to the process.

There are countless “article spinner” type products out there which will crank out many versions of the same article. Maybe the many articles would be considered original content by the search engines…but probably not. Nonetheless, the quality of those auto-generated articles leaves much to be desired.

Every one of these programs I have tested or seen the results from produce very low quality material. No offense to anyone, but the quality is far less than what even those with English as a second language would write.

Traffic from articles is generated by people reading the articles and then clicking the author’s bio or signature link. My question is this: Will anyone want to click the author’s link after reading third grade quality writing? I think not. I for one would not want my name on such low quality work.

One well written and carefully optimized article will generate more traffic than 50 garbage articles. Once again, this is another area where there are simply no shortcuts.

Do You Twitter?

When I discovered many of the top “Gurus” are “Twittering” numerous times a day, I took notice! I joined last week and have made some amazing contacts already! I think it is going to be very productive for me. Plus it is SO easy!

And did I mention it’s free?

Keyword Tools Lie

Posted on May 7th, 2008 in Where's My Traffic by Steve

By far, one of the biggest mistakes beginners make is related to keyword research. I have seen this time and again lately with beginners. They learn how to create a site, they understand about SEO, they create plenty of really good content, but their chosen keywords are poor.

Keywords cannot be the weak link; there is very little room for error. Either the page will rank on page one or maybe page two or it won’t. Anything less will produce little traffic.

Most beginners simply use one of the many keyword tools out there to pick their keywords with. Those tools describe the numbers of searchers there are and sometimes even the amount of competition there is for the keyword. There is one big problem; they are oftentimes NOT ACCURATE!

I learned my lesson early on with them. I spent time writing content upon their recommendations only to discover later that no one was actually searching for those keywords I optimized with! How frustrating that was!

There is more to keyword research than just using the free tools! Yes, I still use those tools, but only for brainstorming purposes. On my member’s page is a link to my own keyword research method. It is the best method I know of for choosing keywords to optimize with.

A Cool Tool

Posted on May 5th, 2008 in Build Your Website by Steve

I just added a tool to the Members Page I found very useful. It is a link checker which will check your entire site for broken links. I ran WeberInternetMarketing.com through it and found 3 links I had made mistakes with which were dead.

I don’t normally post things publicly which are on the member’s page. However, I thought I would give an example here of just what one can expect when they become a customer of mine (and thus have access to my member’s site). There are many more tools on the member site just as useful.

Here is the link to the tool. I highly suggest every site owner use it.
