Internet Marketing: Beauty and Beast

Posted on September 22nd, 2008 in Getting Started by Steve

Those involved in Internet marketing face a true “double edged sword”. The beauty of Internet marketing, compared to conventional businesses, is the ease with which ideas can be tested before committing large amounts of time and monetary investments. Oftentimes, those involved in a typical brick and mortar startup face true “do or die” pressures. Failure can be devastating.

Internet marketing does not carry with it the same ominous threats. Beginners’ failures normally involve a bruised ego and a mere slap-on-the-hand with respect to lost investment at most. This, by the way, is my favorite part of Internet marketing: The rewards can be awesome with little risk!

Ok, that was the beauty of Internet marketing.

Now for the Beast.

As you probably know already, success with Internet marketing is not an easy road.  Honestly, the process requires so much trial and error that if failures meant huge loses, few would last long enough to find success. The beast of Internet marketing is finding the drive and motivation to continue onward.

If you have already had your share of “learning experiences” rest assured you are not alone. Every single person who has any success online has gone through exactly the same thing. Anyone can succeed in Internet marketing. The number 1 determining factor for success is how susceptible one is to quitting too soon.

A Successful AdSense Site in 5 Days

Posted on September 17th, 2008 in Sensible AdSense by Steve

Proper planning is required for building a successful Adsense site.
Proper research and planner are required in order for an Adsense site to be successful.
Success with an AdSense site requires proper planning.

I preach this all the time. However, I still have people contacting me who are struggling with their AdSense sites’ traffic.  Many have skipped a few key steps. Some of these people are even customers of mine who should know better…Shame Shame!

Just kidding!

I realize the problem with impatience. I struggle with it myself.

The biggest mistake I see people doing when creating AdSense sites is jumping the gun and begin investing time before the idea is researched well. Many simply DO NOT spend enough time in the prelims. Internet marketers are all cut from the same cloth in some respects; when the next “greatest idea” hits our brains we cannot wait to implement it! However, the process requires time which is always in short demand. You must use it wisely.

Here is a rough time line you should follow to avoid wasting valuable time with a worthless AdSense site idea:

Day One: The idea pops into your head from nowhere! Go ahead; let it run wild inside your head for a day. Sleep on it well; then see how you feel about it tomorrow. Oftentimes things don’t look the same the next day. Whatever you do, resist the temptation to begin work on the AdSense site that very day! You can spend a bit of time surfing and looking at some possibilities, but don’t spend a lot of time there yet.

Day Two: If the idea still excites you, now is the time to rope it in and be business-like about it. Start planning your research. Surf the web looking at competitors. (If there aren’t many, you had better wonder why.) Start taking notes. Use free keyword tools to help you brainstorm. If at all possible, talk it over with someone. (My wife sure comes in mighty handy in these times; she does a very good job at keeping me away from the deep end.)

Day Three: Plan out and begin your AdWords test campaign. If you don’t do this properly (or at all), you are throwing darts in the dark. If you are not familiar with the AdWords test campaign, contact me! This is by far the most important step of all when building AdSense sites. I really can’t emphasize that enough.

Day Four: Usually, the test campaign only needs run for a day. After that you should have a good handful of very nice keywords which you KNOW receive searches. Today you will decide on the ones you will use. The keyword selection method for the AdSense site involves comparing the number of real searchers to the keyword’s competition. I like to optimize my index page with the one I feel is the best of all the possibilities. Again, if you are not familiar with this research process, contact me!

Day Five: If everything is still a go, it’s time to create the content and build the site. (Remember that 3 or 4 out of every 5 ideas usually are shown to be duds by the above research. Success in Internet marketing requires learning the art of “failing fast”!)

One last thing however:

I know how anxious you may be to get your AdSense sites listed in Google. However, do not begin submitting to the directories before you have most of the content published. It is best to show Google your AdSense site for the first time only after you have plenty of great content! I see far too many beginners throwing up a page or two and then pointing Google to the site. Have some patience and do it right!

If done properly, building small, niche Adsense sites can be a great way to earn a steady “paycheck” from Google! There is no rocket science or tricks involved. Just follow a proven process and success comes amazingly easy.

Internet Marketing: Not All Peaches and Cream

Posted on September 6th, 2008 in Live Your Dream! by Steve

I used to have fantasies of a career in Internet marketing. You know the ones…lounging around the house with a laptop…making sales while I sleep…no bosses…no time clocks…you know the fantasies.

Is it all sweet peaches and cream? Not exactly. Here are just a few issues which Internet marketers find themselves having to deal with

1.    How do you tell your family and friends you are quitting a perfectly great job so you can stay home and “work on the Internet”?
2.    How do you explain to people you really do have a job and you really do need to work the biggest part of 40 hours each week and you really don’t have any more time to devote to “committee” work than anyone else.
3.    Non-Internet marketers simply do not understand the importance of an ISP with 99.99% uptime! It’s been a stormy season here this year. Sometimes the DSL help desk simply does not understand why I NEED my connection back up!
4.    Internet marketing puts a different perspective on the word “backup”. An Internet marketer’s computer files are the company assets! Most of us neglect doing proper backups. An Internet marketer MUST learn this discipline! I have files scattered from C: to F:…I finally subscribed to a great off-site backup system and now sleep much better!
5.    All successful Internet marketers have one thing in common. We are all very driven and can remain on task and focused for hours on end. This ability is a very powerful asset! But it must be managed! Friends, family, your yard, the dogs…all these WILL suffer unless the marketer takes active steps. All of us, by nature as Internet marketers, must constantly keep ourselves in check and keep priorities in perspective.

Ok, enough of the serious stuff for now! My wife and I are going for a walk!
