The Internet vs. The “Bad” Economy

Posted on February 9th, 2009 in Live Your Dream! by Steve

If the demand in your niche (or the economy in general) tanks, do you feel panic? Maybe with all the negative news you can’t help but feel a bit doubtful. However, there is one very important fact all Internet marketers MUST keep in mind.

Unlike most brick-and-mortar businesses, the “size of the pie” available to Internet businesses is NOT FINITE!

In other words, the opportunity your business has access to may not be unlimited, but it most definitely has no default limit.

What does this mean to you?

The good news is that there is ALWAYS more room for your business to grow and increase the market share it enjoys. Compared to the limited customer base of the mom-and-pop business downtown, Internet businesses are far less vulnerable to downturns.

Due to the enormous size of the Internet, even the largest Internet marketers realize they are tapping into only a small segment of their potential customer base at any given time. This fact alone is what makes Internet marketing so attractive!

Since most online marketing techniques cost so little, it’s easy for you to very quickly regroup and redirect marketing methods in order to reach new customers and/or visitors.

When the news media speaks “doom and gloom”, be thankful you understand and can take advantage of the power and benefits of online marketing!

Internet Marketing: Not All Peaches and Cream

Posted on September 6th, 2008 in Live Your Dream! by Steve

I used to have fantasies of a career in Internet marketing. You know the ones…lounging around the house with a laptop…making sales while I sleep…no bosses…no time clocks…you know the fantasies.

Is it all sweet peaches and cream? Not exactly. Here are just a few issues which Internet marketers find themselves having to deal with

1.    How do you tell your family and friends you are quitting a perfectly great job so you can stay home and “work on the Internet”?
2.    How do you explain to people you really do have a job and you really do need to work the biggest part of 40 hours each week and you really don’t have any more time to devote to “committee” work than anyone else.
3.    Non-Internet marketers simply do not understand the importance of an ISP with 99.99% uptime! It’s been a stormy season here this year. Sometimes the DSL help desk simply does not understand why I NEED my connection back up!
4.    Internet marketing puts a different perspective on the word “backup”. An Internet marketer’s computer files are the company assets! Most of us neglect doing proper backups. An Internet marketer MUST learn this discipline! I have files scattered from C: to F:…I finally subscribed to a great off-site backup system and now sleep much better!
5.    All successful Internet marketers have one thing in common. We are all very driven and can remain on task and focused for hours on end. This ability is a very powerful asset! But it must be managed! Friends, family, your yard, the dogs…all these WILL suffer unless the marketer takes active steps. All of us, by nature as Internet marketers, must constantly keep ourselves in check and keep priorities in perspective.

Ok, enough of the serious stuff for now! My wife and I are going for a walk!

Internet Marketing Success: Your Family Can Help!

Posted on April 9th, 2008 in Live Your Dream! by Steve

Just like any new business, Internet marketing is a tough rode at first.  It sure helps if you have the support of your family along the way! Lucky for me, my family has always been right there with me as I worked toward this goal of quitting my job and working from home.

My Mother and Dad gave me a card for my birthday (which is today in fact). It included a pat-on-the-back message in the form of a reminder of how far I have come in the past few years

Here is part of the card’s message:

“You are a success story!”

  1. Your own boss
  2. Able to sleep late
  3. Taking a nap – when needed
  4. Driving less
  5. No desperate phone calls to fix something (from my past job)
  6. Time to fish
  7. Flexible running time (running is one of my hobbies)
  8. Increased income
  9. Many more advantages of being “50” than can be counted

Then my Mother added:

“Remember the old saying – Age is only a matter of mind and if you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.

My Mother always had those kinds of sayings to offer. I have a gillion of them running in my head. But I guess my favorite is the one she painted on a plaque which hung by my bathroom sink while I was growing up.

It said, “Don’t wait for your ship to come in, swim out to get it.”

That applies to about everything in life.

Yes, it does help to have a supportive family!

Internet Marketing Karma

Posted on November 4th, 2007 in Live Your Dream! by Steve

It finally happened. I heard the gurus talk about it, so I was expecting it in the back of my mind. I had a person write to me last night and inform me that I and my website were nothing better than pond scum. She didn’t exactly say “pond scum”, but there was no doubt that is what she meant.

She had been scammed by one of the data entry sites. She was mad. She was mad that I too was offering products about Internet marketing for sale. She thought I should not charge people for information like that. Not only that, she went on to rip apart my free videos. In a page long tirade she pointed out every little detail “she” would do different. I should not wear glasses, I should stand when I talk, keep the free Internet marketing videos shorter, and on and on and on….and on she went! Whew! That was not a good thing to read before bedtime!

Considering she new so little about Internet marketing that she got scammed by the most common online scam, I did not give her comments too much thought. However, what I was most aware of was the extreme amount of negative energy I was feeling from her words.

Negative energy is bad…very bad. My Mother always told me if I did not have anything good to say, don’t say anything at all. I have always tried my best to live by that. I didn’t know it when she first started telling me this, but what she really meant was to keep my outgoing energy positive. Thanks Mother for teaching me that!

There is a very simple truth when it comes to Internet marketing (and everything else). If you give out plenty of positive energy, you will receive positive energy back. If you ooze negative energy like the person did with me last night, you will receive negative energy back. Everyone needs constant flow of energy; I guess some people only know how to cultivate the negative kind.

With positive energy coming to you, you will succeed in anything you do! I heard a very successful Internet marketer say once that you are only 1% as successful by yourself than if you seek out partnerships and relationships with other people in your area. Can this be accomplished by giving off negative energy? Of course not.

Remember, what goes around comes around. Allow positive energy to overflow to others around you. You will create nothing but good Karma for yourself and your business! In fact, put some thought into ways you can more often spread positive energy. You will be amazed at the results!

How to Stay On Track

Posted on September 28th, 2007 in Live Your Dream! by Steve

I know how hard it is at first. The amount of information which must be filtered and digested can simply be overwhelming! Even the basic skills needed to succeed in Internet marketing, like web design, can sometimes seem impossible to master by the beginner.

When I was going through this process, I used a simple technique to keep me focused and on track.

One of the keys to my success was a question I asked myself at the end of each day before going to sleep:

What did I do today to get me closer to the success I was seeking?

It became a rule of mine that I would always have a good answer.

Some days, I would have a long and detailed answer which I was very excited about. Other days, when I had almost no time to do anything else because of my “other” job,  I may only have been able to answer that I spent 10 minutes reading an article about SEO and learned something from it which will help my business.

No matter how small the effort might have been that day, it was important that I always could describe how it was beneficial to the business I was trying to build.

And you know what? If you do that each and every day, you will be amazed at how it adds up over time! All those efforts, both large and small, will all come together at some point for you.

Ok, so what have you done for your business today?

Life is Short

Posted on September 26th, 2007 in Live Your Dream! by Steve

Holy cow! I’m almost 50! I know, don’t tell me, I look only 39. But my oh my, it has gone by fast! Several years back I decided that life was just too short for the rat race my wife and I were living. We live in laid back western Oklahoma too!  I can’t imagine the pressure of life in a big city.

We felt we were running around crazy all the time. I had finally had enough and decided to do something about it. It was not my first time to venture into uncharted areas. I tried several other business ideas in my 20’s and failed worse than horrible. After those fiascoes I went to college and got two degrees so I could be a full time member of the real rat race. My wife did the same.

Don’t get me wrong, I am proud of my degrees and so is my wife. But life is short. In most cases using a degree means living and working under other people’s rules. I’m not a full fledged rebel or anything like that, but I sure got tired of the majority of my waking and productive hours being dictated by someone else.

My first step was to get my wife home. She wanted it to happen and I did too. She had numerous areas she wanted to pursue from home and simply was unable to because of her job. As soon as we were making enough to cover half of her income, we committed to it. By the time her contract was up, we were making much more. Funny how those things work.

That move alone took a huge weight off of us. Life instantly became easier for the both of us. No longer did everything at home have to revolve around our work schedule. It was really a great move and I highly recommend it. When both spouses work full-time jobs, the income is good, but the cost is very high.

Our online business continued growing and I was able to soon take the plunge too. I have to admit THAT was scary. I felt a lot of turmoil inside; leaving a safe, secure, and very well paying job…WITH BENEFITS…made me feel a bit uneasy…to say the least.  But I did it because I knew life was short.

My only regret is that we did not decide and take action sooner. I can’t describe in words how much better life is now. We are both so much more relaxed. Our business is doing very well and will continue to grow - Life is good.

If you are reading this and wishing the same for yourself, commit yourself to it. There is nothing special about my wife or me. We have proved that average people have huge potential. Your success depends only on how much you want it for yourself. Once you make an honest and full commitment, your life will immediately change.

With “Relentless Focused Action”, there is simply no way an average person can fail. I am sure many of you have doubts, but stop and think for a moment how powerful those three words are. Give them a try and see for yourself.
