Posted on January 20th, 2009 in Getting Started, Uncategorized, Where's My Traffic by Steve

A targeted list should be at or near your #1 priority. Many people simply do not understand why a list is vital to the success of almost every online business. Regardless of the niche, 99% of online businesses will benefit from a list of targeted followers.

In the video below I describe the three types of visitors to your site and why the third type makes a list vital for your site’s success.

The One Thing We All Need!

Posted on October 17th, 2008 in Where's My Traffic by Steve

You need it more than anything else.

Without it, nothing else really matters.

What is it?

TRAFFIC!

Internet marketers are dead in the water without traffic. Of course not just any traffic will do; it must be targeted traffic. With traffic, the rest of Internet marketing gets pretty easy. Monetizing your website is simple as pie…if you can just generate traffic.

You need traffic. You work hard to get it. Yet traffic can be the one hurdle that some marketers never get past.

Let me ask you this:

Have you properly researched for keywords? I do not mean just trolling the many keyword tools out there looking for keywords you “think” might be good.

Have you optimized at least 10 or 15 pages for your site with those researched keywords? Do your pages contain 500 or more words each? Is the content good quality?

Have you written new and original articles for the article directories to promote your website? Were the articles optimized well with researched keywords? Have you made more than a “token effort” at this?

Have you worked hard at getting backlinks for your site? Have you spent at least a few days in total at this process alone? (A “few days” means 10 or 15 hours…at least!)

If you answered “no” to any of those questions, then I have helped you plan your work schedule over the coming weeks!

Should you feel the need to back up and start over on this process, I have a new project just for you. Google Traffic in 30 Days is a step by step to-do list which leads you through the entire process of finding a niche, researching keywords, creating a site (no HTML required in this case), and marketing it so it ranks on Google’s page #1…all in just 30 days.

What Do Internet Marketers Dream About?

Posted on July 13th, 2008 in Where's My Traffic by Steve

There is one word which is at the top of every Internet marketer’s list of dreams. It is on our mind constantly. We cannot survive without out it; we always want more. What is the word?

Traffic!

Without it, failure is a given. With large volumes of it, anyone can make good money selling or promoting almost anything. With small, very targeted doses of it, a good living can be earned.

Here is where most beginners miss the boat. They fail to realize that traffic, above all else, is what they are working for.

Imagine if you did just one thing each day that might lead to 5 visits a day. In a year’s time you would be enjoying over 50,000 visits per month! THAT is enough to make a good living from!

Most beginners always want to hit a home run however. They aren’t willing to take it slow and think about Internet marketing in small pieces.

Those of you who figure out that success with Internet marketing involves a whole bunch of tiny pieces of work all coming together will succeed. Those who don’t ever grasp this aspect of Internet marketing will simply continue with their 9 to 5 jobs.

The best traffic of course is free traffic. The absolute authority on free traffic has to be Willie Crawford. Not only is he a very successful Internet marketer, he is one of the most “down to earth” guru’s you could ask for.

Article Writing Shortcuts?

Posted on May 23rd, 2008 in Where's My Traffic by Steve

Several people have contacted me lately about article marketing. There really is no debate that article marketing is a valid and useful tool when it comes to driving targeted traffic to websites. However, many beginners to it will often try to find shortcuts to the process.

There are countless “article spinner” type products out there which will crank out many versions of the same article. Maybe the many articles would be considered original content by the search engines…but probably not. Nonetheless, the quality of those auto-generated articles leaves much to be desired.

Every one of these programs I have tested or seen the results from produce very low quality material. No offense to anyone, but the quality is far less than what even those with English as a second language would write.

Traffic from articles is generated by people reading the articles and then clicking the author’s bio or signature link. My question is this: Will anyone want to click the author’s link after reading third grade quality writing? I think not. I for one would not want my name on such low quality work.

One well written and carefully optimized article will generate more traffic than 50 garbage articles. Once again, this is another area where there are simply no shortcuts.

Keyword Tools Lie

Posted on May 7th, 2008 in Where's My Traffic by Steve

By far, one of the biggest mistakes beginners make is related to keyword research. I have seen this time and again lately with beginners. They learn how to create a site, they understand about SEO, they create plenty of really good content, but their chosen keywords are poor.

Keywords cannot be the weak link; there is very little room for error. Either the page will rank on page one or maybe page two or it won’t. Anything less will produce little traffic.

Most beginners simply use one of the many keyword tools out there to pick their keywords with. Those tools describe the numbers of searchers there are and sometimes even the amount of competition there is for the keyword. There is one big problem; they are oftentimes NOT ACCURATE!

I learned my lesson early on with them. I spent time writing content upon their recommendations only to discover later that no one was actually searching for those keywords I optimized with! How frustrating that was!

There is more to keyword research than just using the free tools! Yes, I still use those tools, but only for brainstorming purposes. On my member’s page is a link to my own keyword research method. It is the best method I know of for choosing keywords to optimize with.

Small Niches for Big Bucks!

Posted on January 31st, 2008 in Where's My Traffic by Steve

Someone contacted me a few days ago about an idea they had for a site. He was thinking of making a review site for dating services. Some of you reading this right now will instantly have the same thought I had: Dating is a HUGE niche. The competition in that area is simply too fierce for any but the most experienced Internet marketer.

It is much better to have a tiny piece of a small niche than nothing from a giant niche!

I told him he should find a small niche within that giant one.

A few days later I was still thinking about his idea and what I told him. I did a few Google searches.

I searched for and found a few of those tiny niches I told him to look for.

I found thriving sub niches in areas such as “African dating”, “dating for smokers”, “rural dating”, “disabled singles”…and the list went on and on!

No matter what your niche is, you can always improve your business by finding and targeting smaller sub-niches within your market. Oftentimes, the work involved in reaching those sub-niches will be minimal.

Long Tail Keywords for Traffic

Posted on January 20th, 2008 in Where's My Traffic by Steve

Once a person is dedicated enough to learn simple web design and basic SEO, opportunities usually start presenting themselves at a rapid rate. However, there is one more piece to the puzzle before web design and SEO will bring success.

Choosing the correct keywords to optimize with is VITAL! One has to choose a keyword with enough searches a month to be worthwhile. On the other hand, if the keyword is too popular, the competition might be so stiff that a new site has virtually no chance for showing up on page 1 or 2 or even page 30 of the SERPS!

I would rather have a small percentage of search traffic for a long tail keyword than zero percent for the top keyword of a niche.

If a site’s topic is already a very niche area, going after the top keyword for the tiny niche is probably OK. However, if the site’s theme involves a highly competitive area, optimizing for long tail keywords, even for the home page, will be required. Start with these longer keywords; as the site becomes more respected by Google, high traffic keywords can be attempted with future pages.

Track Your Visitors!

Posted on December 5th, 2007 in Where's My Traffic by Steve

Your number one concern with a new website is to get traffic to it.  Many beginning marketers skip a very important step at this point. They don’t take the time to properly track and study the traffic coming to the new site.

Even if your site is only getting 10 page views per day, it is important to know everything you can about those visitors. Where did they come from…the U.S. or ???. How did they find your site? What keywords did they use? How long did they stay on your site? What page were they on when they decided to leave? What browser did they use? What was their connection speed?…and the list goes on.

It is vital you track and study these visitors!  Good analytics will provide you with ideas on how to improve what you are doing right and how to spot problems in your current marketing. Many hosts offer analytics with their hosting packages. Some of these may be fine. However, I encourage you to give Google Analytics a try. It is free and extremely easy to setup. Sign up for a free account and you’ll get a few lines of code to paste on your site’s pages.

One more thing, Google Analytics offers “goal” setting tools.  They allow you to track conversion rates for purchases or leads. I use this to track my page views of a given page and how many leads that page generates. …pretty cool stuff!

$19.95 to Submit Your Site is a BAD Idea!

Posted on September 28th, 2007 in Where's My Traffic by Steve

We’ve all seen the offers:

Get your site submitted to thousands of search engines for just $19.95!

A good idea or a bad idea? It can’t hurt can it?

uhh…yes it can hurt! You can pay the $19.95 and be worse off than before! Here’s how:

Those sites will use scripts to submit your site. Many of them will submit your site over and over and over……and over …..to the same search engines. Let’s say Google did index your site, but now it still gets multiple submissions. This looks like a spamming technique! The only thing Google hates worse than MSN and Yahoo is a spammer!

If you submit your site to these people, you have no control over what they do with regard to the submission process. Besides, this type of deal doen’t help anyway. Say they do only submit once. A direct submission is worth FAR less than if Google finds a site ACTUALLY linking to your page.

Save your $19 and spend an hour submitting to free directories and let the search engines find you like that. THAT is the best way to get into the big search engines!
