Starting an Online Business - The Basics
- If you are a beginner, DO NOT think AdWords is your friend. I love AdWords, but beginners need to understand a few things - Watch my AdWords warning video.
- Read my Internet marketing blog for more information about getting started.
- Don't think you will make money posting ads to free classified sites; you won't.
-
Don't pay more than $8.95 for a domain name.
-
Don't pay more than $3.95 for your site's first host plan.
-
Don't create any part of your new Internet business's site until you have a basic understanding of search engine optimization (SEO). I cannot emphasize enough how important this is!
-
Don't pay someone to build your site who doesn't know proper SEO techniques.
-
Don't pay to have your site listed in "dozens" or "hundreds" of search engines. This is a total scam and waste of your money.
-
Don't pay for "thousands" of hits to your website. This will not generate ONE sale and is a waste of money.
-
Don't pay for hundreds or thousands of links to your site. Not only is this a waste of money, Google calls this technique spamming and can get your site BANNED?
-
Don't clutter your site's code with scripts or substitute Flash for text.
-
Don't believe there are any shortcuts to success. If there were, everyone would use them and be successful.

On the other hand...
-
Read all you can about marketing an Internet business.
-
Be willing to invest the time needed to build the business. If shortcuts seem like the only answer to you, spend your time and efforts elsewhere.
-
Content is King for the search engines. They LOVE keyword rich, original content! This is the ONLY chance a new site has for ranking well.
-
Design every page of your site with both humans and search engines in mind.
-
Start small. Don't try to reinvent the wheel. It is fine to "think big", but your initial goal should be to get a small, working site with at least the home Page Ranking well in Google and Yahoo for a great search term. Also, don't think PayPerClick will be your answer! AdWords has a VERY steep learning curve!
-
Use free online tools to determine exactly what search terms your potential customers are using and write your content accordingly. Without this knowledge, your site will not be successful.
-
The learning curve is high for this exciting business, and it requires a LOT of work. But because the Internet offers a HUGE customer base, the rewards can be unimaginable!
